FAQs

Why do I need Safeguarding Training?

The government produces a guidance document "After School Clubs, Community Activities and Tuition: Safeguarding Guidance for Practitioners The guidance talks about many areas of important practice such as; responding to safeguarding concerns, managing disclosure, using safer recruitment strategies and managing allegations. As a dance teacher it is essential to know how to respond to a safeguarding concern and know who to report our worries to.

Do I need to know about safeguarding adults?

Yes! In our schools we all work with adults, whether that is teachers, parent and carers or whether we teach adult classes. Safeguarding adults has been on a statutory footing (the same as safeguarding children) in England for the last 10 years. It is just as important as safeguarding children and your school needs a safeguarding adults policy, procedures and trained staff as well as a designated safeguarding lead or wellbeing officer who understands both safeguarding adults and children's legislation. (safeguarding for dance professionals training covers key aspects of both safeguarding adults and safeguarding children's best practice).

What areas should I be focusing on to make my school as safe as possible?

When thinking about the safety of your students, customers and staff you may want to explore, as an example, areas such as:

  • Health and Safety, First Aid, Risk Assessment and Fire Procedures (including registers and evacuation)

  • Your approaches to social media, photography and marketing

  • Your school code or conduct, and how you manage expectations and standards with students, parent, carers and teachers

  • safeguarding, how you respond to disclosure and knowing when, where and how to share concerns about child or adult safety.

  • Ensuring a great approach to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, making sure your school and classes are accessible and having strong approaches to bullying, harassment and discrimination

  • ensuring a safe environments by creating robust processes regarding safer recruitment, managing allegations and governance and complaints.
